Lady Vols continue assault on top-25 soccer teams
Story from the Knoxville News-Sentinel

From staff reports

The Tennessee Lady Vols won't have much time to savor the biggest victory of their six-season soccer existence.

After upsetting No. 13 Brigham Young on Saturday night, the Lady Vols plunge back into the top 25 today, facing No. 19 Southern California to complete their two-match stay in Provo, Utah.

The upset of BYU, an NCAA tournament Sweet 16 team the past two seasons, surpassed Tennessee's previous best victory - 3-2 over then-No. 15 Kentucky in Knoxville last Oct. 15.

Saturday night's victory was a tribute to the team's youth and its defense. Freshmen Keeley Dowling and Sue Flamini, two of five rookies to start, scored the goals. Goalkeeper Cori Stevens withstood BYU's 15-6 edge in shots. The Cougars dominated the second half with a 12-3 edge..

UT coach Angela Kelly lauded the play of Dowling and defenders Carie and Tracy Swibas.

"Our starting lineup was so young," Kelly said. "They came into the match as girls and took one step closer to becoming women. What a great learning experience this match was for my squad."

Southern California (1-1) lost to BYU on Friday 2-0.
